World Cup Fever
Unlike saturday night fever, world cup fever brings out the best in the world population. Like tournaments in previous years, this year's world cup promises to bring its share of surprises. Already on the first day of the competition the Ecuadorians beat the Polish in a shock result 2-0. I decided to run a pool at work to let people bask in the brilliance of their world cup predictions. The consensus favourites are the Brazilians, but I'm not convinced they'll take the top prize on foreign soil.
Work continues to be a bit of a bore. The processes are killing me. I really don't know what got me into electrical engineering. I really like nothing about it. I would much prefer something I could actually get my head around... but I suppose work is work. I just can't keep up with the software grind... it's completely soul shattering work. The worst part is that I try to sit at my desk to do some actual engineering work and I can't think because all I have are flashbacks to years of software / system testing. Enough griping... though at least here my griping is somewhat tolerable...
Off to London and onto Spain next week. I'm quite excited. This is a trip I meant to do when I was in 2002. One thing I realize now more than ever is that you need to do what you want to do. No one else is going to give you the permission. Yes, you have to take care of your responsibilities, but you should be able to define your life. Work kind of sucks that way. It feels like I'm in some kind of cult where all reason has been suspended. Maybe I just didn't get enough experience outside of work before jumping in with both feet. And knowing your politics and when to speak them is a good idea. I can't really tell if people at work just do not understand or care about what is going on in the world, or if everyone is so introverted that they choose not to talk. Who knows. Some days I feel like I'm walking through a haze.
Back to the trip. I'm very keen to see Spain. Architecture is supposed to be excellent and I'm looking forward to a bit of beach time too. Need to chill more... nobody likes to spend forever at work. Not that peeps at work would seem to care. Too many old dudes. And sadly I've become prematurely old. I really don't know what happened to my 20s. What happened to exploring and discovering yourself? I didn't go as planned. Everybody needs to grow up sometime.
Tomorrow is a fun filled day of erands, chores and trip planning. Which reminds me... I need to get a flight to Barcelona...
Great line from a Hayden song: You get up to leave as the sun hit the trees and you jump in the water with him at your feet...
Groovy.
